Luke Bible Reading Challenge

Challenge yourself to achieve 1000 points by completing your choice of the following activities. Each activity has a certain number of points depending on how challenging it is. Some activites may be particularly suited for children and families, while others may be more suited for adults and teens. One of the best parts of a challenge is doing it together. Find another family to do it with, or involve your Sunday School or CYC.

Bible Journal - 500 Points

Use a notebook or a Bible Reading Journal to take notes while you read. You can order a prepared reading journal on Amazon (link below) or use just a regular notebook. A page of suggested questions to ask is also available below. Share your thoughts or favourite verses with your friends and family or on Social Media.

Bible Marking - 100 Points

As you read through Luke, use coloured pencils to mark all the occurrences of emotions (eg: joy, rejoicing, weeping, amazement, fear etc.). When the four gospels are paralleled with the four faces of the cherubim, Luke’s gospel is aligned with the man – the priest. Therefore, one of the main titles ascribed to Christ in the gospel of Luke is “Son of Man.” It is a title of a relatable priest, a suffering servant, and ultimately a coming judge – For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Because of this there is a greater emphasis on emotion here than any other gospel.

CROOKED ROADS STRAIGHT

Here was John the Baptist’s mission statement: “A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all mankind will see God’s salvation.” (Luke 3:4-6).

I wonder if this should be our mission statement too? John the Baptist prepared the hearts and minds of the people to receive Jesus Christ. Where there were barriers in the way to accepting him, John removed those barriers. Where people needed to turn a corner in their lives to find Jesus, John helped them around. John made finding Jesus easy for people. His job was to point people to Jesus, and by the time Jesus started his ministry, the people were ready for him.

John did a good job with his generation, but for “all mankind” to see God’s salvation, more work needs to be done. That’s where we come in. Let’s follow John’s example and make it easy for people to find Jesus whether they are looking for him or not.
